REVIEW

“How could I be a good bad-guy if I didn’t have a few bad good-guys on my side?”

On the Bayou by Sean Bridges is a gritty thriller that will keep you on edge and turning pages. Word of caution: this tale is not for the squeamish because it contains a copious amount of misogyny, blood, torture, and overall cruelty.

DEA Special Agent Jennifer Nash is accused of botching an assignment and is given another chance for redemption. The catch is that it is in the Louisiana Bayou, filled with mystery, danger, and untold horrors. What Jenn and others go through to take down a meth operation is the stuff of never-ending nightmares. While some in the group ultimately do not make it out alive, nobody escapes unscathed. You’ve been warned!

With all the warnings aside, On the Bayou draws you in and holds you there all the way through. The author presents several dynamic characters that provide plenty of interaction that can be a bit infuriating at times but always compelling. While a prominent theme here is good versus evil, that concept is turned on its head. The line between good and evil is blurred, crossed, and even erased when you least expect it. Trust, therefore, is elusive, and Jenn and the others in her group are constantly questioning each other’s loyalty. That doubt can be both fatiguing and deadly.

The story does conclude somewhat abruptly, with some ends remaining a bit loose. That could mean there is more to come or that the author purposely chose to end when all the danger has been exhausted and rescue is imminent. Either way, this aggressive tale gently drifts across the finish line with the battered survivors in tow. What a ride!

On the Bayou is fast paced and engaging; therefore, if you like your mysteries with plenty of action, gore, and Louisiana swamp mayhem, then On the Bayou is a perfect choice.
