Mr. Mercedes is definitely a different type of scary for Mr. King. While there isn’t the trademark supernatural element (or perceived supernatural element) in Mr. Mercedes, the horror still rears its ugly and mesmerizing head. The human psyche is where true horror resides, and Brady’s psyche is especially nasty. Throw in a det-ret with nothing to lose, and you got yourself one hell of a horror story.
Stephen King veers off into the land of detectives hunting bad guys, and he doesn’t sugarcoat anything, as usual. Phrases and story bits will sucker punch you with all its naked politically incorrectness. Many readers will find this distasteful, but hey now, whatever. Real life doesn’t care who it offends!
Jump into the world of Bill Hodges and find out for yourself how Mr. King can take the traditional detective story and give it his special touch of horror.
