US Marshal Madison James may not be sure who shot her three months ago, but she does know one thing–it’s time to get back out into the field. When her partner, Jonas Quinn, receives a message that a federal warrant just came in on a man connected to a string of bank robberies, Madison jumps at the chance to get back to work. What she and Jonas find is a bank robbery in progress that’s gone wrong–and things are about to get worse.
For these bank robbers, it’s never been just about the money. It’s about taking risks and adrenaline rushes and getting caught is not part of the game. When the suspects escape, Madison and Jonas must hunt them down and bring them to justice before someone else–someone close to them–gets hurt . . . or worse.
From Seattle to the San Juan Islands, bestselling author Lisa Harris takes you on a nonstop chase where feelings are complicated, and failure isn’t an option.

“The unexpected was often harder than the anticipated.”

The Chase by Lisa Harris is thrilling and suspenseful but with a tenderhearted, Christian-based layer that softens the brutal pace of the hunt. Deputy US Marshals Jonas Quinn and Madison James are back in the game and hot on the trail of some crafty, thrill-seeking bank robbers. When the situation escalates and people start getting hurt, Jonas and Madison must keep their razor-sharp focus and refrain from letting things become too personal. Any distraction or one wrong move, and the fugitives will be in the wind, for good.

Lisa Harris is definitely an expert at building an electrifying plot and infusing it with dynamic relationships, personal struggles, and a bit of romance, resulting in a top-notch, fast-paced story populated with several compelling characters. The Chase is book two in the US Marshals series, but it can stand alone quite well; however, book one, The Escape, is so exciting that you really should pick that one up as well and read the series in order. Jonas and Madison are a good team in both The Escape and The Chase, so you won’t want to miss out on any of the fun that both books have to offer.

The author adds in an extra level of mystery, starting in book one when we find out that Madison’s husband, Luke, was murdered five years prior, with the case still unsolved and the killer still at large. While Madison and Jonas chase the bank robbing fugitives, Madison’s personal mystery of her husband’s death continues to heat up. Having more than one mystery on deck could be a bit confusing, but Lisa Harris presents them with a realistic air mixed with a significant amount of fictional flair.

The bandits in The Chase lead Madison and Jonas on a not-so-merry pursuit through Seattle and beyond, but good always triumphs over evil eventually, right? Right?

Finding these miscreants is definitely not a slam dunk for this US Marshal duo, and the actual chase turns into a cat-and-mouse game that quickly escalates into an aggressive and deadly search that is anything but a game. The Chase is a rough and tumble ride, but the camaraderie and tentative feelings between Jonas and Madison provide the overall story with an interesting and touching diversion from all the high-speed action. As an added bonus, the Christian theme is prevalent but not overpowering as both Madison and Jonas explore and express their faith in subtle yet powerful ways.

Amidst the hunt and frantic chase scenes, some prominent points portrayed throughout include handling grief and navigating evolving personal relationships. Dealing with tragedy and moving on can be difficult because of unresolved guilt or the fear of future commitment because of the concern of experiencing even more loss. Both main characters must work through these personal challenges while still focusing one hundred percent on their job, creating a much more dynamic plot than just two people chasing down outlaws, no matter how thrilling and exciting that traditional fictional artifice turns out to be. And The Chase is definitely pretty exciting all the way through, with enough twists and turns to keep the reader racing toward that last enticing page and more than ready for the next book.
