New Life, New World, New Problems
Alexandria Duvalier’s new life on the magical world of Meredith takes a shattering twist when her father, the Duke of Wheel, pledges her hand in marriage to the cruel lord, Rodric Regret. Desperate to escape his clutches, Alex flees the city with the help of her friend, Tell Tollet, a handsome lieutenant in the city guard. But their freedom is short-lived when Rodric’s brutal brother, Stefan, joins in the pursuit.
Hotheaded Prince Tal, heir to the throne of Meredith, has but one goal: kill the Dark Queen and destroy the Veil, the enchanted barrier which has ensnared generations of his people. He discovers a breach in the magical wall and leads an army through, bent on completing his mission.
When an unusual and potent magic calls to him, he follows its trail back to Alex. Thrown together by circumstances and chased across the wilderness by the ruthless Lord Stefan, Tal and Alex are drawn to each other by the greatest magic of all—love. Now they just need to stay alive . . .

“Sometimes, such life and death circumstances produce a closeness, a camaraderie not experienced at any other time.”

Escape from Wheel by Michael Scott Clifton is book two in the Conquest of the Veil series, and reading the books in order is highly recommended. The action and characters in book one flow smoothly into book two, creating an ongoing story full of magic, mystery, and marvelous, action-packed excitement. Alexandria Duvalier is now firmly entrenched in her new life in Wheel as the daughter of a Duke, but she must pay a price for her lineage and obligations. Marriage to the evil Rodric Regret is unthinkable, but escaping his clutches and her noble destiny will take courage, hard decisions, and no regrets.

One of Alexandria’s guards, Tell Tollet, is in love with the fair Alex, and he vows to help her escape Wheel once and for all. But does Alex return his level of love, or does she only feel affection for the young man willing to risk his career and his life for her? Her dreams and visions have been full of another man whose face remains a mystery. Alex must navigate her escape and sort out her feelings for Tell because the man whose future is undoubtedly entwined with hers continues to haunt her. The story that unfolds overflows with fast-paced action, including the evasion of those assigned to bring Alex back alive at all cost and a budding romance that is well scripted and fun without being overly sappy.

Tal is a young prince who contributed to breaking through the Veil and keeping the portal open just enough to let an army trickle through. Tal is anxious to conquer the Veil and bring down the evil Veil Queen Marlinda, so he decides to break away and scout ahead, keeping readers scrambling to keep up with his exciting and highly dangerous adventures. What Tal discovers on this reconnaissance surpasses anything he has ever imagined, and his life changes drastically and forever.

Michael Scott Clifton dives into Escape from Wheel, book two of the Conquest of the Veil series, with fierce prose and well-developed characters that rocket forth from page one. Once the overall chase after Alex is on, the action never lets up. Alex remains in the dark about her own magical abilities, but when beset by her pursuers, that magic literally explodes from her, wreaking havoc and ultimately leaving a blazing trail for her pursuers to continue the hunt. Escape from Wheel is filled with magic, fantasy, and odd creatures, but the plot is easy to follow. Clifton expertly keeps the story on track and exciting, without overloading the reader with too many fantastical descriptions that might confuse and confound. Instead, Escape from Wheel is engaging and has a believable realism not often found in fantasy novels.

The ending is both sweet and fraught with the promise of more thrilling adventures in book three. Can’t wait!
