M.W. Devers has been crafting stories since childhood, drawing from a lifelong love of reading that began at age three. The idea for Woods & Wings took root during a family vacation to a theme park, and he’s been dedicated to bringing it to life ever since, beginning in 2022. This is his first published work of fiction. MWD enjoys the quiet magic of early mornings spent world-building and shaping characters, all from his home in New Braunfels, Texas, where he lives with his family.

Woods and Wings by M.W. Devers is a wondrous ride of epic proportions. While fantasy can be exhilarating, it is often filled with predictable elements, such as dragons and other mystical creatures, magic, and hard-to-pronounce names. This book takes some of those elements and turns them on their head. Instead of fairy-tale dragons, Woods and Wings has wingroans, which are large and deadly and can fly. They possess enticing elements that people want to harvest and use for good and even for selfishness, and they are also almost extinct. Almost.

M.W. Devers’s debut novel is beautifully written, imaginative, action-packed, and mesmerizing. Fifteen-year-old Astraya Myna could be considered the main character, but so could her older brother, Raustra, and their grandfather, Amir. Vulmen, a female wingroan, also takes center stage as both a protagonist and an antagonist. Minor characters are so incredibly developed that they become main characters whenever they appear. This author knows exactly how to engage the reader from the first sentence and propel the plot forward through excellent prose, a fantastic plot, extraordinary people (good and bad), and sibling wingroans with totally different agendas.

Vulmen has been held captive and exploited for her physical attributes for decades, and life for the citizens in Rhigov has been quite good, comfortable, and prosperous. That is until Vulmen’s brother, Vronti, swoops in and wreaks havoc, setting a quest in motion for the Myna family that is epic, exhilarating, and often calamitous,

Some major aspects here include greed, patience, family, loyalty, quid pro quo, revenge, and even a bit of sweet romance. There is also an ironwood staff that is reminiscent of the sword in the stone that symbolizes power and destiny. But whose power and destiny you might ask? Well, spoilers of any kind would spoil the fun; therefore, discover for yourself the absolute adventure that awaits you between the covers of this stunning book.

Good news! The epilogue teases with a brilliant cliffhanger. By that point, you will definitely be completely smitten with this world, these people, and the wingroans and their unique abilities. Readers, the Myna family, and all the other people in Rhigov had better buckle up.
