“Some things are meant to be…And if that’s true, they have a way of working out.”
Pringle Prawn by Michael Scott Clifton is not necessarily a children’s story, but it is a delightful and often humorous traverse into and out of Almeera, the land of fairies and other mythical creatures, through a gateway opened by a magic key.
In Tyler, Texas, Ben Hastings, a college history professor with a PhD, has promised his girlfriend, Cara, that he will buy a house so they can move their relationship to the next level. But finding something within his meager professor’s budget to appease Cara and her rich daddy will be tough. That is, until he is introduced to an affordable yet rundown mansion, complete with an ancient and fabulously intricate grandfather clock. That’s when the fun begins and when Ben’s life changes forever.
Word of caution: Pringle Prawn has some mature language and inuendo and delves into the dark world of human trafficking, tamping down the humor a bit and adding an all too real and dangerous layer to the overall plot of mystery and magic. While nothing is too explicit, use caution if looking for a book for young children, especially with such an eye-catching cover and captivating premise. With that said, Pringle Prawn is entertaining and imaginative, with some truly extraordinary characters and enough twists and turns to keep the reader full on engaged from start to finish. Who wouldn’t love to find a hidden staircase and have enough curiosity to find out where it will lead? Although, take it from Ben Hastings, curiosity can have consequences.
Pringle is a prawn, or a Tinker Bell-like fairy, who will steal both your heart and any sugar you might have on hand. She is from Almeera and rescues Ben when he stumbles into her world and is immediately chased by a monstrous beast. When Pringle takes him to a Wizard’s Hutch (tree) for protection, Ben is exhausted, hungry, confused, and more than ready to find his way home again. What Ben finds when he does return home is a pocketful of trouble and a nosy busybody of a neighbor who has become a thorn in Ben’s side. Unfortunately, the human trafficking element has been stewing and rears its ugly head a bit too close to home, forcing Ben into high gear and some magical action.
The pacing is quite fast because every chapter offers a new surprise to an already inventive story, with an action-packed, humorous, and sweet ending that will leave you cheering for karma and a bit of magic for the win.
Michael Scott Clifton is a master at characterization, storytelling, and worldbuilding, combining all to create some amazingly magical stories. Pringle Prawn is yet another well-crafted tale that you won’t want to miss, full of ingenuity, fantasy, friendship, and true love built on fairy dust, inquisitiveness, and a lot of sugar.

I agree — it’s definitely not a children’s book and hopefully won’t get confused for one! But it’s delightful! I’m about 3/4 in and loving it. Thanks for a great review!

Great review, Ruthie. Hopefully, folks will realize that the book isn’t aimed for a really young audience.
