“The little bird peeked out to see what he could see. Then he ducked back in his nest.”
No one and nothing stay the same, including growing baby birds who are way too comfortable to leave the nest.
This brief yet meaningful story is about a young bluebird who is not quite ready to leave his cozy nest to join his family in a nearby tree. Mama bird and baby bird have that all too essential conversation about moving forward, even if we don’t want to. Mama knows exactly how to distract her baby with a story that covertly pushes him to discover the power and purpose of his wings.
A Time to Fly by Diann Floyd Boehm is a sweet little story designed for the smallest of children who are ready for story time, but it is still fun for all ages and perfect for adults who love to read aloud to their own “baby birds.” The overall story highlights the importance of discovering the independence and the courage to move onward and upward in life’s journey. This story may be incredibly short, but the overall themes are many: bravery, purpose, family, patience, understanding, love, and a bit of trickery as a positive means to a positive end.
The dialogue between baby and mama is simple and direct, and the illustrations, which take up quite a bit of the book, are well done, colorful, and just intricate enough to capture the imagination.
What I love most about A Time to Fly is that it validates being scared of the unknown and the patient willingness of others to help us through life’s uncertainties when we need it.
