“I do believe it’s ‘Leadeye’ Lomax.”
Outlaw West of the Pecos by Preston Lewis is Book 7 in the H.H. Lomax Western series, and it is as fabulous as all the other uproarious books. In his memoirs, Lomax tells of his interactions with famous and infamous historical figures, his daring capers, and his uncanny ability to get into and out of enough scrapes to sink a ship or maybe bury an outlaw.
In Outlaw West of the Pecos, it is 1895, and Lomax, who is caught cheating at cards, finds himself unceremoniously kicked off the Southern Pacific passenger train in Langtry, Texas, where he meets Judge Roy Bean and his beer-drinking bear, Bruno. After fining Lomax heavily for every offense he can think of, the Judge orders Lomax to pose as the Gringo Bandito in Bruno’s cage to entertain and scare the hair off train passengers stopping in Langtry for overpriced warm beer at the Judge’s saloon. Lomax eventually sheds that persona (sort of) and heads to El Paso with the promise and the money to find a willing writer to pen the biography of the highly egotistical Judge Roy Bean. Once in El Paso, Lomax falls headlong into one dangerous adventure after another. While his survival is never certain, Lomax thinks quickly on his feet and leaves the reader laughing at the end of every single page.
Preston Lewis has the astounding ability to twist historical personalities and facts into some dandy knots and then write fiction with an unmatched level of entertainment, filled with characters that you will either love to meet or love to run away from at the drop of a holster. Lewis has obviously put in significant time, effort, and hilarity in creating the H.H. Lomax character, and waiting for the next book is an exercise in patience. Outlaw West of the Pecos continues the amusing Lomax memoirs, and the only downside is trying (and failing) to read it slowly to make the fun last as long as possible. The good news is that Preston Lewis has many books, both comical and a bit more serious, to satisfy his new and loyal readers, with nary a stinker in the bunch.
Even though Outlaw West of the Pecos is book 7 in this series, it can stand alone just fine, but you will no doubt find yourself wanting more of H.H. Lomax in your life, so grab the entire series and lose yourself in Lomax’s cheeky Wild West adventures.
