Review

Five Stars

“Most of the time we don’t need the devil’s help to do the devil’s work—sometimes we
do just as good a job on our own.”
~ from The Shower Stall

These tales truly are tantalizing and twisted. All are cautionary tales that can either be read in one or a few sittings or told nightly to a brave child. The stories actually address many issues that plague children as well as society as a whole: bullies, lying, telling the truth but considered a liar, revenge, the marginalized, breaking promises, coveting, gluttony, trust, and more. Many of the stories are reminiscent of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, full of creepiness and dark humor, whereas others are modern tales that thrill and chill or provoke thought.

I enjoyed the uniqueness of each story. Other than an odd sort of scariness, the book does not follow a single theme, and each story can stand on its own (although, Bunny Slippers has a sequel).

Every time I finished a story, I considered it my favorite. So naturally the last story is my favorite (really, it is). The House on Troll Hill is definitely tantalizing. We often think of our home as a fortress that protects us from evildoers lurking just outside. In this story, the house actually does attempt to protect its inhabitants by shutting its doors and windows tightly against a troll in disguise. But even a well-meaning and vigilant house can be fooled into letting its guard down.

In my opinion, the creepiest one of all is The Shower Stall. But then again, what about those persistent Bunny Slippers?!

Each story is a delight and perfect for a chilly evening, just in time for All Hallows’ Eve.
