Love and Politics Collide in This Emotion-packed
Fourth Texas Gold Novel
Kellie Coates Gilbert strikes gold once again in the latest book in the Texas Gold Collection. Readers will be drawn into the story through Gilbert’s deeply emotional writing that highlights the complexities of human relationships.
Out of her desire to care for her mother who is suffering from dementia, Leta Breckenridge drops out of college. Her next step means leaving her comfort zone. After learning that a delinquent account may force her mother into a less desirable facility, Leta takes a leap and lands a high-paying job at an Austin public relations firm. But her dream job soon turns into a nightmare when she learns that the firm she is working for is a front for a political opposition organization—and that the research she has been collecting will be used against Nathan Emerson, the handsome senator she’s swiftly falling in love with.
Nathan is a rising political star being pressured to run a bid to unseat the current governor of Texas. He’s already in a relationship with a woman much better suited to be a politician’s wife, but he’s never met anyone like Leta. Could this feisty woman hold the key to his heart—and his future?

The title for this contemporary Christian romance is perfect. Discerning what matters most can be difficult when you’re faced with opposing choices. What makes this story interesting is that it can be easy to connect to Leta’s constant battle to stay afloat in a sea of bills, bills, and more bills, with little to no opportunity for improvement. What happens when Leta must weigh a boatload of money that she desperately needs against doing the right thing? Read the book and find out!
As far as the leading man goes, Nathan’s perfect personality and high moral standards are unfortunately a bit unbelievable for a political figure. It’s good to hope, however, and the love interest between Nathan and Leta provide a bit of a Cinderella backdrop. Don’t be fooled! Even though Leta struggles to make ends meet, she’s her own woman and doesn’t actually need to be rescued by a Prince Charming (but it doesn’t hurt that Nathan is rich, good looking, and extremely upstanding). A classic fairy tale with a modern twist!
The issues this book explores are many: the necessity of having a college degree (apparently, any degree will do), honoring and caring for your parents when they need you the most (on the flip side, standing up to your parents when they try to bulldoze you), the ugly side of politics that includes smear campaigns and digging up dirt (or inventing dirt when no dirt exists), relationship promises that can be tricky to navigate, and understanding what matters most and then sticking to your guns. This book covers it all! Well done!
Kellie Coates Gilbert is a former legal investigator and trial paralegal, as well as the author of A Woman of Fortune, Where Rivers Part, and A Reason to Stay.
